| Holistic Dentistry: For your whole health | |
The secret to a long and healthy life is to look at the body as a whole, not just individual parts. When a problem arises, discover and treat the cause, not just the symptoms. Doing so could stop most ongoing diseases and reverse the dwindling spiral of life. | ![]() |
| Address the whole body | |
As you may know, the body is an electrical system. The teeth and jaw are its most electrical components. The heart sends large amounts of electricity to the jaw joints (TMJ) and teeth. The teeth are electrical batteries connected to every organ, gland and muscle group of the body. See the that shows direct connection between your teeth and your body organs). As you eat or drink, streams of electricity come out of the teeth, tongue and TMJ as protective immune sensors and other sensors. The electricity neutralizes anything foreign or anything that might be harmful to the body. These sensors also let the brain know what's coming into the digestive system so it can be prepared. Digestion actually starts in the mouth so it's vital your oral health is maintained at a high level. If not, the body may get the nutrition it needs, and if the body is not operating at its best, the teeth, gums, and TMJ can suffer. Thus you can see the co-dependence found in the body.
| Diagnosis and treatment | |
At our office, we have the means for diagnosing these types of problems and developing a personalized health improvement program using designed clinical nutrition. It's called Contract Reflex Analysis (CRA). By testing the body's reflex points, we can determine the health and flow of energy in every function and part of the body. These points are derived from the ancient Chinese system of acupuncture. Using CRA, we test for active organ or system points. Each point has meaning. Then, with designed clinical nutrition, we can correct the real cause of the problem, allowing the body to heal itself. As another example of how oral health effects the entire body, consider this, Several recent studies continue to support a relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular (heart) disease. For instance, the bacteria causing plaque buildup on your teeth can travel to other parts of your body, and have been found in clogged arteries which can lead to heart attack. Relationships have also been found between infection of the gum tissue (periodontitis) and stroke.
| Mercury toxicity | |
Your mouth can be the entry point of serious toxins to the body as well. Poisons and harmful chemicals are in the air we breathe the water we drink and the food we eat. Products we use every day like paint, aluminum pots and pans, and antacids can affect our bodies. The elimination of these metallic elements and toxins is an important preventative measure and for maintaining good health. This is another area where we can help - with metal or mercury - free fillings. In 1979, reports began appearing in research literature documenting mercury vapor constantly being released from amalgam ("silver") fillings, especially when the fillings were stimulated by chewing, brushing or exposure to heat. In 1984, human autopsy studies were published that demonstrated the amount of mercury found in the brain and kidney tissue was related directly to the number of mercury amalgam fillings in the teeth. Today there's a growing concern in the dental profession about the use of mercury in dental fillings. In the almost 160 years silver-mercury-amalgam fillings have been used, the theory has been that the mercury was bound up with other metals, protecting the body from its dangers. These new studies are showing the flaw of this thinking. Mercury toxicity is the reaction a person has when exposed to mercury. This reaction varies, depending on your genetic inheritance. It can be categorized into five divisions: neurological (effecting emotional and/or motor responses), cardiovascular, collagen diseases (arthritis, lupus, bursitis, etc.), immunological, and allergies. One way to avoid mercury toxicity is to have mercury - free fillings used in restorations, like we do in our office. If you already have mercury amalgam fillings, removal and replacement with non- - mercury-containing material can reverse some of the effects of mercury contamination.
